Let's ask some questions...

Let's ask some questions...Let's ask some questions...Let's ask some questions...

Okay, so. Right up front:

Yes, I recognize the provocative nature of the title of this website.  Perhaps Milat Kiros doesn't actually hate America.  I suppose that's still to be seen.  She surely holds some positions that are pretty contrary to our Nation's founding principles.

What is likely the case is that this self-avowed socialist is going to be the next representative to the US Congress for the first district of Colorado; the City and County of Denver.

On June 30th, she completely thrashed incumbent Diana DeGette in the Democrat primary.  Given the political demographics of our district, she is a shoo-in for the November 3rd general election

As such, we deserve to know more about her before her inevitable election.

Who is Milat Kiros, and what does she believe?

Milat Kiros is endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America.  You've heard of them and the way they are tearing through the Democrat party lately, overthrowing the more traditional party members in primary after primary nationwide, elevating their candidates within the broader Democrat party.  This is mostly happening in safely blue districts like ours, where whomever wins the Democrat nomination is almost guaranteed to win in the general.  Thus, by activating the grassroots (those most engaged voters who show up in force for a primary election), they're guaranteed to take the seat.

Highlighting her endorsement by DSA isn't meant to fear-monger or accuse guilt-by-association.  As you'll see, she's leaning into this affiliation, so it's fair to learn more about what they think, and more importantly, inquire where her and their beliefs and platforms coincide, and where they diverge.

The company we keep.

While any candidate for office will attract many endorsers, and can't fairly be held responsible for every crackpot or nutjob who has a campaign sign in his front yard or wears a t-shirt with her name on it, or donates five bucks to her campaign, check out the screengrab above, from her official campaign website.

She's embracing it.

As you can see, this is literally the first endorsement her website touts.  The Democratic Socialists of America is prominently displayed just below her introductory video on her website.  It's clear that this is the most important thing she wants you to know about her affiliations and who she most wants you to know is endorsing her.

So, who are these people?

There's a lot of talk lately about this group.  Rather than speculate or demonize, let's just look at what they say they're about in their own words.

After all, if this is an association she obviously wants us to know about, learning about them is a good way to learn about her and what she believes.

Democratic Socialists of America, in their own words:

There's a lot of talk lately about this organization.  The DSA has been around for a long time, but its recent leverage within the traditional Democrat Party is drawing eyeballs, and they're more active now than they have been in a long time.

In fact, this spring they created a new manifesto, titled "Workers Deserve More."  They're literally calling it "Our Program," so it's fair to consider this an up-to-date capture of what they believe and what they'd like to see happen.

Just as fair, of course, is to ask candidates for federal office who proudly display the DSA endorsement on their official campaign website what they think about the topics covered therein.

So let's dive in:

What follows is a list of items from the DSA's "Program," direct quotes from their website (even the images are cut-and-paste directly from their site), and some questions for Milat Kiros...

It'd be awesome if Kyle Clark could get some more time (or anybody else in the Denver media market, for that matter) and sit down with Milat Kiros and ask her these questions.  Not gotcha questions, mind you... These are the stated positions of the organization that she chose to prominently display as the first of her endorsers on the front page of her official campaign website.

"Freedom To Flourish"

What the DSA's Program Says:

"Provide free, quality public education from pre-K to college and cancel all student debt. "

Which raises the question:

Didn't Joe Biden attempt to wipe-out college loans?  And who pays for "free" education?

So, Milat Kiros...

Do you support cancelling all student-loan debt?

"Healthcare For All"

What the DSA's Program Says:

"Guarantee universal healthcare at no cost to individuals, including complete access to reproductive and gender-affirming care."

Which raises the question:

So, they want publicly-funded gender transition surgeries?  And again, who pays for all the free stuff?

So, Milat Kiros...

Do you support public funding for gender transition surgeries?  For whom?

"Housing For All"

What the DSA's Program Says:

"strictly regulate investment properties, establish universal rent control, "

Which raises the question:

Hasn't rent control diminished housing availability and increased costs everywhere it's been tried?

So, Milat Kiros...

Do you support rent control in the City and County of Denver?

"Finish Reconstruction"

What the DSA's Program Says:

"Enact reparations and massively invest in good jobs, quality housing and infrastructure in neglected minority communities."

Which raises the question:

Reparations, really?  We're going there?  And here's our first instance of "massively invest"

So, Milat Kiros...

Do you support reparations?  How would you fund them?  Speaking of funding, what does "massively" look like here to you?

"End Mass Incarceration and Police Immunity"

What the DSA's Program Says:

"Demilitarize police departments, disempower police unions, and redirect funding to public services as steps towards fully abolishing the police and prison system"

Which raises the question:

Reforming is one thing.  But "fully abolishing the police" is kinda stark.

So, Milat Kiros...

Do you believe the City and County of Denver should have a police department, or not?

"Feminism For All"

What the DSA's Program Says:

"end policies that oppress bodily autonomy and intimate life, including patriarchal restrictions on abortion, childbirth and childraising, gender expression and transition, marriage, and divorce. "

Which raises the question:

Which policies actually oppress intimate life?  What are the restrictions on abortion (none in Colorado, btw), childbirth, gender transition, marriage (!)?

So, Milat Kiros...

Considering it'd be publicly funded, based on the previous section, should there be any restrictions on gender transition treatment?  Like, say, on children?

"Green New Deal"

What the DSA's Program Says:

"Pass a federal jobs guarantee. Implement massive investment in sustainable, publicly owned energy and transit infrastructure. Phase out the use of fossil fuels. "

Which raises the question:

Didn't this whole thing fall flat on its face already?

So, Milat Kiros...

I dunno, Milat.  More 'massive investments'.  What's your plan to fund that?

"End the US War Machine"

What the DSA's Program Says:

"Defund the Department of War. End all foreign wars and close overseas military bases. "

Which raises the question:

They mean the DoD (oy, that new name...)

So.. literally no national defense.  As with the police, not reform, rather end.  Mmmkay.

So, Milat Kiros...

Do you support ending the Department of Defense altogether?  Yes, I realize it's a silly question, but these are your people here, Milat!

"Free Palestine"

What the DSA's Program Says:

"Recognize the rights of the Palestinian people, including the right of return, the right to resist military occupation, and the right to self determination in a free Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital. End all military and economic aid to Israel. Prosecute U.S. and Israeli leaders responsible for the genocide in Gaza. "

Which raises the question:

Ah, yes, of course.  The Jew-hatred.

So, what happens to Israel when you make their capital the capital of a different country?

And who do you have in mind for this prosecution?

So, Milat Kiros...

Which "US...leaders" do you think should be prosecuted for their responsibility for the 'genocide' in Gaza?  Be specific about names and charges.

"End Blockades, Embargoes, and Sanctions"

What the DSA's Program Says:

"End economic warfare against countries whose governments act independently of the United States, such as Cuba, Venezuela, and Iran."

Which raises the question:

Talk about a (literal) murderers' row.  These are the countries they want to highlight?  Again, mmmkay.

So, Milat Kiros...

Explain why it's wrong that Cuba, Venezuela, and Iran should be under US sanction and/or "economic warfare".  Have they done nothing wrong?

"Abolish ICE"

What the DSA's Program Says:

"Legalize migration, grant amnesty for all immigrants regardless of status "

Which raises the question:

Quite a bold demand with the heat we've had this summer to abolish ice... j/k

Seriously, though...no immigration enforcement?

So, Milat Kiros...

Should there be any punishment for those who break immigration law?  Should there be any immigration law?

"Democracy for All"

What the DSA's Program Says:

"Extend full voting rights to all permanent U.S. residents and restore the right to vote for incarcerated people and people with criminal convictions. "

Which raises the question:

There's an argument for redemption among those who have served their time for previous crimes.   But, non-citizens voting too?

So, Milat Kiros...

Should people who are not citizens be allowed to vote?

"A Real Democracy"

What the DSA's Program Says:

"Abolish the Electoral College. Replace the President and Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress."

Which raises the question:

Wait.  What?

So, Milat Kiros...

Wait.  What?

"A Democratic Congress"

What the DSA's Program Says:

"Expand the House of Representatives, implement proportional representation and ranked choice voting in all elections, and abolish the Senate."

Which raises the question:

Expand by how much?  Dictate to every district how they conduct their elections?  And wait...what's that about the Senate?

So, Milat Kiros...

Have you discussed with your primary endorser, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I, VT) that you'd like his entire chamber eliminated?  What was his reaction?

"Economic Democracy"

What the DSA's Program Says:

"Establish public ownership of the largest corporations and essential industries to ensure democratic control and accountability to the people. "

Which raises the question:

Seizing the means of production, eh?  A little on-the-nose, don't you think?

So, Milat Kiros...

Let's just start with the two largest:  Walmart and Amazon.  How would you seize them?  Oh, and how is confiscating a company "Democracy"?

"Democracy at Work"

What the DSA's Program Says:

"Protect, expand, and enforce the rights of all workers to form, join, and strike with their unions, regardless of industry. "

Which raises the question:

Notice the missing verb?  What about workers who reject unions?

Oh, and this fundamental right is something they want explicitly to deprive of police a few sections back.

So, Milat Kiros...

Is it "Democracy" when 50%, 75%, 90% of a workplace votes against unionization, yet they're forced to pay dues to an organization that fights against their political views?
